Food Security Conditions

  • While there is an increasing trend in Food Security Index from 2010 to 2012, a decline in 2013 may cause a slowdown, but not necessarily a cause for alarm;
  • Food Security Index may decline further in 2014 but is expected to recover in 2015 to 2016. Subsequently, better food security condition during 2015-2016 is expected due to the improvement in accessibility of carbohydrate-based food.

Warning!!!
  • Availability of major food items largely contributes in the movement of food security condition.
  • There was already a threat in the availability of major food items in 2013, thus, Food Security Index is foreseen to exhibit risk in 2014.
  • The threat scenario may be influenced by sharp decline in rice stocks in 2012-2013.
Food Availability vs. Food Utilization

  • The trend of availability of major food items from 2010 to 2013 moved in opposite direction with food utilization.
  • Probable slight increases in food utilization from 2013 to 2016.
  • The decreasing behavior of availability of major food items in 2014 may continue until 2016.
Food Accessibility

  • Fluctuations were observed in the behavior of accessibility of carbohydrate-based food in 2011 to 2013. However, in the next three years, it may post an upward trend towards the upper bound.

  • Protein-based food was highly accessible in 2010 to 2012 but went down in 2013.
  • The trend of accessibility of protein-based food from 2014 to 2016 may move within the bound.
